Some jobs test a plumber’s skill, patience, and problem-solving abilities to the limit—this was one of them. It started with a routine call about a blocked gutter, but little did we know, we were about to take on a full-blown rescue mission involving a flooded roof, invasive roots, and an aircon unit nearly submerged in water!
The Problem: A Blocked Gutter Turned Roof Lake
Upon arrival, we discovered the client’s roof slab was completely flooded, and the outlet was clogged with roots growing inside the pipe. To make matters worse, small stones had fallen into the downpipe, further complicating the blockage. With an air conditioning unit sitting right in the middle of the water, we knew this wasn’t just a plumbing job—it was an emergency.
The Battle Begins: Unblocking the Pipe
We started with our trusty spring auger, sending both big and small augers into the top of the downpipe. We managed to pull up some roots and stones, but after just two rods, the auger got stuck. Switching tactics, we tried using the rods without an auger, but still, the water refused to drain.
Realizing the urgency of the situation, we connected a hosepipe to the roof to siphon water while continuing to work. We then attempted to clear the blockage from the bottom of the downpipe, managing to pull up more roots but still unable to fully clear the obstruction.
At this point, we gave the client two options:
Open up around the base of the downpipe and remove the elbow to clear the blockage.
Drill a new outlet into the side of the pipe to redirect the water safely.
The client opted to let us try a bit longer before making a final decision. But despite all our efforts, the blockage remained stubborn. There was only one way forward—time to break through.
The Turning Point: Breaking Through the Blockage
With approval from the client, we started the challenging process of cutting open the wall where the 110mm downpipe exited. The first signs of success came when we removed a massive root system inside the pipe. As soon as the roots came out, a rush of water poured out of the pipe like a mini waterfall. At first, we thought we had hit a main water pipe the force of the water was so strong.
To reach the bend in the pipe, we had to deal with a thick layer of concrete. Standard tools weren’t enough, so we brought in the heavy artillery—a breaker. Working in a tight, awkward position, one of us guided the breaker while the other pushed through, inch by inch. It was tough, backbreaking work, but eventually, we won the battle and removed the final pieces of the 110mm bend.
Victory: Restoring Proper Drainage
With the old bend out, we installed a brand-new 110mm bend and ensured the system was clear. The client wasn’t home at the time, but we called to update her, explaining that we’d return when the weather was clear to patch up the wall and secure the new setup. She was thrilled and gave us the go-ahead to proceed.
The Unexpected Twist: Flooded Neighbor’s Storeroom
Just when we thought the job was done, another problem emerged—water from the downpipe had flooded the neighbor’s storeroom! Our client, asked us to pause and see if we could assist. We went to investigate, but we could not get access. Our Client assured us she’d check with them later to see if help was needed.
Mission Accomplished: A Home (and Roof) Saved
After days of battling roots, water, and concrete, we successfully restored proper drainage, preventing further flooding and damage to the client’s property. The once-submerged aircon unit was safe, and the client could breathe easy again.
This was more than just a plumbing job—it was a rescue operation, proving that sometimes, it takes determination, creative problem-solving, and a bit of heavy-duty breaking to turn chaos into clarity. 💪🚰
